She’s happy and comfortable. We had a second local opinion who knows her well. Shawn and I have decided not to attempt heroic surgery. We enjoy pampering her, knowing we’re on borrowed time. The shot attached is here, now. We’ll never be ready for her passing, but we’re doing our very best. She had the opportunity to meet our 4 month granddaughter and say good bye to the VA & PA kids. Rough days filled with great memories & snuggles. I committed to weekly spa visits when Selah Spa & Massage opened on Main St. in Cuba. (HIGHLY recommend) The hope was – weekly visits for toes, nails, and facials, plus taking time to get out of sweats and returning to the gym would launch me back into productivity. I had so much planned for our two week staycation. It just hasn’t happened. I’ve been telling the hubs I’m taking the Christmas tree (our first fake) down in an extremely organized fashion. The plan was to separate ALL the ornaments, 1962 to present, into three boxes for the kids and one for us. I admitted yesterday that today, we get it back to the barn in its current unkempt state. I’ve spent a lot of time where I am now. In my chair, considering action. Maybe 2022 will be the year. 2022 will be the year we get back to business. 2022 will be the year our stress level can dip below ACK. By 2022, I hope to reach my health goals, despite needing more, not less pills and sleep. In 2022, our family will be bigger and stronger. Bidding Farewell to our Best Dog Ever I was considering a ‘Sober February’ to prove to myself that I’m okay, drinking wise, following this difficult year. I’ve been super-enjoying the dry SoCo Manhattans. A lot. Owning and operating two toddler hospitality businesses in Cuba has been rough. My dad died, my mom’s not well, my mother-in-law is improving, and now, Petri is gravely ill. She has been acting different the last couple of weeks. Fussy with food, griping about getting back into the Ford Flex, and asking to go out in the middle of the night. She collapsed Friday evening, ‘recovered’ and joined us to sleep upstairs on her own. Saturday morning, she was waiting for me to go downstairs as she always does but fell clumsily as she got up. We took her to the emergency Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center, thinking she had had a stroke. Her horrible diagnosis by sonogram is advanced cancer. The kind doctor we spoke to thinks she has a few days and has irreversible internal bleeding. She prescribed some Chinese herbal medication as a Hail Mary. Petri is not complaining a bit. The picture attached is today. Just two days ago, she was finding balls in the snow by the iced lake happily wagging her tail and sniffing the fresh winter air from her back seat window. She’s had a charmed life and has added so much more to ours. She was happily at her work perch on the porch of The Old Grey Hound last week. She’s sitting beside me now, keeping an eye on the ice fisher folk, the Bostons sleeping, and ‘The Gods Must be Crazy’ on FXM. Ground beef & mashed potatoes – her favs – are on the menu tonight. I’m so happy we have time to say goodbye. That’s a gift, as well. I’m grateful both businesses are closed for a couple of weeks. The Old Grey Hound will re-open Thursday, February 18th with new hours. Thursday/Friday/Saturday 11am to 7pm. We will provide lunch delivery service. We plan to continue takeout and delivery only until the beginning of March, dependent on Covid. We’re itchy to invite folks back indoors but will wait until we’re confident of all our safety. As for the Inn, our long-term guests from Texas left sooner than planned and we’re hoping to entice the new crew to stay with us. It’s an ideal way for us to maintain income during the pandemic. I’m great. 98.6 with great lung capacity. I’m sitting at my desk overlooking Cuba Lake. Not bad. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to think & organize. I haven’t been able to find anything concrete that defines ‘essential’. It says ‘AVOID DISCRETIONARY TRAVEL, shopping trips, and social visits.’, from ‘Guidelines for America’ postcard we received from coronavirus.gov and the CDC, but what is considered ‘essential’? I’ve been working from home since March 15th I’ve left the house three times. Once to deliver Meals on Wheels, once to walk with Betty, buy stamps and drop stuff for CLYC, and one trip to BJ’s and the bank drive through. I’ve been ‘good’. The line was long at the drive through, but folks confirmed I’d accept help with my groceries, and I felt safe to others and myself all the time. – except once. While delivering meals to a new gentleman on the list, he opened the door, came over and shook my hand. It happened so fast, I couldn’t NOT put my hand out to this kindly, thankful gentleman. I deliver again next Thursday and am ready this time. Back to my need for guidance for a good girl: Is half and half, my favorite coffee lightener, ‘essential’? Am I causing farmers to dump milk and lose last year’s cabbage crop by NOT getting takeout from Giant Food Mart? What about tangerine Emergen-C? I had bought buy 1/get 1 in Pittsburgh and am down to a couple packets. I’ve been diligent about having a packet a day, along with a tall glass of water with cider vinegar, stretching, and fresh air to help my immunity. Is Emergen-C essential? It’s working?! I’m healthy! Our son has filled in two squares in on our ‘’all out of’ list on the fridge; pork butt & wood smoking chips. Essential? Maybe not so much. I haven’t researched, but am curious, who gets the five cents from the paper carryout bags? Okay, on to living deliberately. I’ve been ‘rethinking & renewing’ more since the beginning of the year, including how I practice the big three for mother earth; reduce, reuse, and recycle. Over the years, I’ve separated recyclables at home and at work. I’ve annoyed my family and many employees by grabbing and rinsing plastic, glass, and metal containers, and uncrumpling paper from the trash. I’m proud that The Old Grey Hound has done away with our dumpster, post reconstruction. We recycle, compost, and have very little ‘trash’. We’re collaborating with the Village of Cuba to have a couple of electric chargers on our property. The village purchased the chargers and we’re working together to have them installed. Genesee Parkway LLC will pay for the ongoing bill for electric. There are no artificial ingredients in the products and a portion of our purchases is returned to bee research. We use both Young Living and Norwex natural cleaners at the inn and continue to explore other natural alternatives. The inn crew doesn’t use Windex in favor of Norwex cloths. I must not have the muscle anymore, so I use Windex with reusable Handi Wipes, but am researching vinegar & water. We use Handi Wipes for all cleaning and wash them, saving a lot of paper towels. I still can’t beat paper towels for thoroughly draining bacon but am looking for an alternative. I’ve been rethinking my home front and will write about it some other time. The hubs and I are testing some wax cloth wraps that worked great on a lemon, so now we’re trying it on his liverwurst. We’ve been using cloth napkins. We’re messy, so they’re generally only good for one use. Reuse probably trumps washing over paper. I sincerely hope NYS is right that by enforcing payment for paper or BYO bags while shopping, we NYers will rethink and adopt other steps to preserve our planet. I’m not sure if it’s the daycare snots, middle school snots from my teacher-daughter, or maybe, just maybe, I’m getting older and need to take better care of myself and slow down. I started the year intentionally living my values and allowing myself time to do one thing at a time. I’m reframing to ‘live deliberately’, our new Allegany County, NY tag line. Somehow, this tremendously enjoyable time has tipped the scale of my health. Since I returned from Italy in October, I feel like I’m either sick, tired, or both. I know my CBFF and I hadn’t been to the gym or to yoga, and SD and I haven’t been walking together. I have successfully made sleep a priority and have lost weight by making better food choices since the beginning of the year. Even so, the ick remains. I know the flu is a thing this year, but c’mon! Last week, I didn’t catch up on year end accounting and still don’t have all the Christmas decorations stored away. I did one thing at a time and took some extra minutes to leave whatever I was doing in a slightly better way. My desk is slightly more organized. I moved my teas, oatmeal and smoothie stuff to make it easier to make good choices. I brought a finite amount of work to accomplish while Shawn and I enjoy Charlie. I hope to finish this blog and take a nap – what I really think is best for me right now. I could finish countless other work or tidying things, take a shower, or do a yoga YouTube video. But for now, I’m off to grab an hour nap before the prince awakes. I hope to get some active minutes in tomorrow in a museum to help my body get its groove back. Change is happening along with the seasons. I’ll introduce these wonderful folks and how they’re helping at The Inn at 28 and The Old Grey Hound. On the far left is my husband Shawn & I with our dog, Petri. Our son John is next, who is working tirelessly (with a smile) to get the pub open, along with his Boston Terror, Stella. He’s back in Cuba and he’ll be managing The Old Grey Hound. Next, in orange, is Claire, our Innkeeper, with her chocolate lab, Mak. She’s who you talk to when you call the inn. Her specialty is customer service. She makes sure that everything is just perfect, all day, every day. She’s the queen of the castle! Next to her is Brien, our greeter/decorator. She comes to the inn each evening to answer questions and fix a snack for guests. Brien also maintains our booth at the Friday Cuba Farmers’ Market, managed by the Cuba Cultural Center. Stop by and say hi and ask any questions while you’re there or ask for a quick tour! She takes care of our seasonal decorations with her sister, Katie, who’s holding Edna, our naughty chicken. Katie is CCW for the Inn, ‘Certified Chicken Wrangler’. She cares for our feathered ladies, recently moving our babies into their new coop from her kitchen. When they got large enough that she needed to move them with a wagon, it was time for them to move to the inn. Annette is behind Brien. She handles marketing for both the inn and pub. She also synced our reservation system AND AirBnb. She’s a wiz on analytics AND flipping rooms from time to time when our summer help goes back to college. Maureen, my wonderful niece flipped rooms, cleaned grease traps, and painted away her summer vacation. We’re hoping she serves as a weekend warrior at the pub occasionally along with her brother, Kyle, who has the huge handsome smile right under the guest sign. He’s been whistling all doo dong day as he’s scraped the pillars of the pub back to the 1850s and learned a lot as Mike’s (our property manager) assistant. Both Kyle & Maureen are off to Erie PA for college. In the front is our bartender/up-cycler/event planner, Mary Beth with her daughter Lindsey and her son, Graham. Lindsey and Graham are leaving us to move to Portland, OR. We wish them all the very best and plan to get grandma out there as frequently as possible. Lindsey has been grooming the raised beds and flowers on the property, along with sharing some great vegan food. Mary Beth has been busy getting the pub ready and has been hosting baby showers, celebrations of life, and surprise parties at the inn. We expect to host more when the pub is open. In the rear with the grey shirt is Mikayla. She’s an organizational genius. She makes order out of chaos. She assists with accounting, flipping, painting and just about anything, extremely well, always. She recently had a wrench thrown in her plans. The dental hygienist school she was planning to attend this fall closed unexpectedly. More change! She has the cutest Béarnaise Mountain Dog puppy with her boyfriend Aaron, in the red next to her. He and Evan, with the smile to the left of the post are our grounds guys, grooming the property around their other jobs. Between Evan and Kyle is Taylor. He’s back in Cuba, post college, for a short time before he leaves for the Army. He has been painting his way through college. His experience has paid off, but I’m afraid he’ll be outta here before it’s all complete. We wish him all the best and are proud of his service. On the far end with the slight smile is Mike, our ‘property preservationist’. Mike does fabulous work, from assuring the faucets and drains run perfectly to re-supporting beams and building shelves at the pub. He gets it done. Ike is in the chef jacket, using his experience to create a terrific menu for The Old Grey Hound which will include small plates, sandwiches, salads, & entrees. He’ll be using local offerings of fresh, quality ingredients as available. Our planned back of the house manager, Laura, is missing from this photo. Inn History In 1852, Russell Smith built his family “mansion,” now known as The Inn at 28, for his immediate family. With their notable wealth, the Smith family was a vital part in establishing Cuba, NY along with General Calvin T. Chamberlain (Chamberlain Room). It is said that Smith and Chamberlain were in competition acquiring property in Cuba, with Smith owning most of north Cuba and Chamberlain the south. The prominent Smith family even attended the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. The adjacent building, “Grocerie,” was constructed as a warehouse and hardware store to serve Genesee Valley Canal travelers. The canal ceased operation in 1878, and the building became a residence for more of the Smith family before being used as a schoolhouse. The Chamberlain Room: In 1835, General Calvin T. Chamberlain built the first public house, opened the first mercantile and was instrumental in the growth of Cuba, NY. The Ackerly-Sill Room: Ackerly, Sill and Co. was formed in 1871 to purchase and cure local cheddar. During this time, Cuba became the cheese center of the world. Descendants of the Smith family, the Mountains, took over ownership of the property and lived at the residence for many years, up to the early 1980s. The Mountain Lake Room was named for the Mountain family & Cuba Lake. Our beautiful lake was created in 1858 to help maintain the water levels on the Genesee Valley Canal.
